What's Available:

What you need:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency, along with two years of higher education or an equivalent combination of higher education and/or work experience as a childcare teacher in a licensed childcare center.

  • **If higher education is not in child development, course work will be required within 3 months of hire to include:**"Introduction to the Child Care Profession" "Skills and Strategies of the Childcare Teacher."

  • **If working with infants:** "Fundamentals of Infant and Toddler Care" course will also be required.

Job Description:

The Child Care Teacher plans and carries out a daily program designed to meet the physical and developmental needs of a group of children. This person works collaboratively with other staff assisting in the classroom, is sensitive and accommodating to the needs of individual children, and relates well to both children and adults. The Child Care Teacher is the point person in his/her assigned classroom and is responsible for oversight of classroom operations.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Plan, schedule, and implement the daily program of developmentally appropriate experiences for a classroom group of children, stimulating children's cognitive, social/emotional, language and health and wellness development using different approaches to learning. Utilize a wide range of theory- and research-based approaches, strategies, and environments, including the integration of the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards, to set the stage for developmentally appropriate practices within the classroom.
2. Maintain a physical environment conducive to children's growth and development and arrange the classroom to promote optimal program functioning in accordance with appropriate environment rating scales.
3. Promote positive self-esteem of children through positive guidance, body language and tone of voice.
4. Create and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans using resources, assessments, and goals of individual children, focusing on the development of individual strengths.
5. Facilitate culturally appropriate and inclusive programs and activities. Utilize family goals, traditions, and cultural considerations in planning environments and programming to enrich children's health, relationships, and experiences.
6. Maintain regulatory compliance with WI DCF Licensing Rules. Demonstrate best practices in childcare
7. Maintain individual child portfolios, demonstrating developmentally appropriate goal-setting, observations, and achievements.
8. Communicate effectively with children and adults. Express ideas, thoughts, and observations appropriately in writing and verbally.
9. Develop meaningful and responsive relationships with children and families, focusing on a family-centered environment that encourages family involvement in a child's development and learning.
10. Schedule and facilitate parent conferences to discuss children's development; collaborate with families to devise learning and development strategies as appropriate.
11. Observe and evaluate children's cognition and general knowledge, learning approaches, social and emotional development, language development and communication, and physical health. Analyze, interpret, and communicate assessment results accurately and effectively, with the goal of obtaining valid, useful quantitative and qualitative information.
12. Ensure the safety and security of the children at all times. Follow regulations and professional standards as they apply to health, safety, physical activity, and nutrition.
13. Follow hospital and departmental policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
14. Direct the work of co-teachers, student teachers, and volunteers. Provide oversight to student teachers, working collaboratively with university or college staff to ensure a positive and rewarding student placement.
15. Certificate from the Registry, the Wisconsin early childhood professional recognition system, within 3 months after assuming the position, as evidence of meeting the education and experience qualifications.

16. For those working in a teacher capacity or with children under the age of 2, additional coursework may be required, which will be directed by the Child Care Center Manager. If required, the Manager will discuss timelines and required coursework with the child care teacher. These materials will then be submitted in a timely manner to the state registry.

17. Complete required continuing education on an annual basis.
18. Perform other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency.

If higher education is not in child development, the following course work will be required within 6 months of hire:

"Introduction to the Child Care Profession" or equivalent coursework from a college or school curriculum

DESIRED
Associate degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education or Associate's degree in unrelated field plus 30 related credits; or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field. Completion of required coursework as described in DCF 251 Licensing Rules for Group Child Care Centers.

Work Experience:
DESIRED
6 months of experience or a minimum of 80 days as a full-time childcare worker or 120 days as a half-time worker or volunteer in a licensed day care center, a kindergarten, or an early childhood program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF).

License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

DESIRED
First Aid Certification
