Job Description

Job Description:

Do you love solving challenging problems, thinking analytically, and working in groups? Are you passionate about developing innovative solutions to the climate crisis? Are you interested in being a critical member of a quickly growing team at RMI?

RMI's Climate Intelligence Program is seeking a Senior Associate to join our Carbon Markets Initiative, which was launched in December 2021 to bring greater trust and transparency to the voluntary carbon market. We see transparent, efficient, and credible carbon markets as a vital financing mechanism to accelerate progress towards a 50 percent cut in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Since then, we've transitioned from functioning as a nascent startup to being recognized as market-shaping experts with a theory of change that, if scaled, could play an instrumental role in building a trusted, reliable, and credible carbon market. We are focused on improving data integrity on both the supply and demand sides of the market - as such improvements will strengthen the credibility and reliability of the VCM.

Position Overview

As a Senior Associate, you are a creative problem solver who uses your analytical abilities to conduct compelling research and facilitate a range of actors seeking to improve the climate impact of offset markets. In this position, you will be an independent contributor and work closely with colleagues on projects under the direction of more senior staff. You will develop expertise around carbon markets and will provide subject-matter support on this topic both within RMI and across RMI's broad range of collaborators. This position will report initially to the Manager of the Carbon Markets Initiative.

Your responsibilities as a Senior Associate include:

  • Contribute research and knowledge in structured forms (models, templates, frameworks) to inform the development of both a supply-side data framework and demand-side engagement that increase transparency, trust, quality, and equity in the VCM.

  • Analyze existing methodologies for various emission reduction activities to certify carbon credits and clearly communicate key steps of quantification in project implementation to a wide range of audience.

  • Synthesizing analysis and recommendations into clear and compelling communication channels (i.e. presentations, blogs, written reports, and digital content).

  • Facilitate interviews and consultations with external stakeholders

  • With assistance from CMI leadership, help structure and guide the work of more junior team members.

  • Other duties, as assigned, to support the natural evolution of our team and related deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's level degree in sustainability, economics, finance, business, engineering, or environmental science, ORundergraduate degree and2+ years of work experience and excellent work references

  • Familiarity with climate change issues and carbon markets

  • Ability and willingness to engage with technical material, and provide qualitative and quantitative evaluation of existing initiatives

  • Strong writing skills, and the ability to write for multiple audiences

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates will have experience in climate and carbon finance

  • Knowledge of the carbon offsets industry (including project developers, verifiers and registries, corporate buyers) is valued but not required

  • Understanding of how various technologies (e.g., satellites and remote sensing, machine learning, distributed ledger technologies) can support climate solutions

  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well

  • Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines and take risks by exploring and testing new ideas

  • Experience working among diverse groups with varying perspectives and/or facilitating challenging conversations

  • Demonstrated initiative and accomplishment in previous work

We encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply, regardless of whether you feel you meet 100% of the qualifications. The top candidates will bring their own unique perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds from a variety of industries along with many but not necessarily all the skills listed above. We offer professional learning and training opportunities to help you develop the skills you may not have had the opportunity to cultivate yet.
