GENERAL PURPOSE

Supervise and provide clear direction and professional leadership for the Shipping department employees. Responsible for communicating with shipping leads/clerks to ensure that administrative tasks associated with the pick, pack and processing of shipping activities are completed accurately and on-time to performance standards. This position is also responsible for the training and development of shipping employees as well as reporting on KPIs (key performance indicators) specific to the shipping department.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Responsible for all aspects of performance management including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and recognition
  • Provide effective, constructive and appropriate feedback and leadership to direct reports to foster positive, team atmosphere; ensure personal and professional development of direct reports
  • Supervise and coordinate work schedules and duties of workers performing assigned tasks to ensure product is picked, packaged and labeled correctly prior to shipment.
  • Maintain high level, two-way communication with the other warehouse supervisory/management staff
  • Observe and measure work procedures to ensure quality of work
  • Ensure thorough and effective communication with internal Company personnel, customers and third-party vendors, suppliers, etc. regarding warehouse operations
  • Provide proactive communication relating to shipping status and distribution issues and provide feedback to internal groups of material management, production planning and assembly.
  • Confer with management or subordinates to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances.
  • Balance on an ongoing basis the workload among the team to ensure efficient, cost-effective workflow through the warehouse
  • Initiate and assist with the creation, development, and implementation of warehouse processes and procedures, specifically relating to the Shipping function
  • Work with the Production and Inventory Control team to assign and maintain inventory locations in the warehouse
  • Oversee the shipping functions and verification of materials being delivered on-time and per customer specifications (specific to retail and online distribution channels).
  • Monitor headcount and increase or decrease the work force utilizing a temporary work force to ensure sufficient capacity to meet internal and external customers' needs.
  • Understand workplace hazards and take steps to proactively prevent and report hazards or injuries in the workplace. Cooperate in Safety Programs, initiatives, and investigations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Proven ability to manage people; train and motivate employees, as well as delegate effectively
  • Dependable and enthusiastic with the ability to use good judgment, work independently with minimal direction, and possess a strong initiative and positive attitude
  • Ability to thrive and perform well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong process focus - ability to recommend and implement changes in processes to improvement efficiency and performance
  • Knowledge of warehouse management systems and processes including experience in an advanced warehouse environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must possess high degree of professionalism and ability to handle confidential information
  • Must be detailed orientated and have excellent follow-through skills
  • Proven ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Must have the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulation or government law
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, internet and Microsoft Office suite of software including Word, Excel and Outlook (or related e-mail system)
  • Strong metric focus
  • High math aptitude
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
  • Ability to safely operate forklift, hand truck, tape gun and other warehouse equipment
  • Licensed forklift operator

Minimum Qualifications and Education:

  • Associates or technical degree and a minimum 5 years of experience in warehouse/distribution environment, including 2 years of previous supervisory experience; or combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Previous experience with ERP systems

Special Job Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work extra hours when needed, including weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in management or other related field
  • Possess an understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles; and KANBAN systems
  • SAP Knowledge
  • Bilingual Spanish/English

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, reach above shoulder level, reach below knee level, bend/twist/stoop, squat/kneel, climb, and regularly lift/carry, up to 60 lbs; and occasionally up to 75 lbs as needed. Also may include pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs. Regularly requires coordinated movements of the fingers for data entry on a keyboard.
  • Accurate depth perception is required for operating a forklift
  • Steel-toed shoes are required for working in this position
  • Regular shop assembly/distribution center environment (no air conditioning)
  • May require regular ground travel to other company facilities within the local metropolitan area
