Job Description

Position Summary:

This position will provide leadership to our Enterprise Risk Management Actuarial function. This will include leading a dynamic and highly visible enterprise team as well as strategic leadership for actuarial financial risks for Securian. Responsibilities will include leading and developing a team of actuarial leaders and/or professionals and providing strategic and thought leadership to all Securian's ERM functions, including leading/coordinating FRC and chairing risk governance committees.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Leads staff to achieve functional, department and enterprise objectives:

  • Accountable for performance, results, and budget of ERM Actuarial function

  • Actively and effectively leads a team of actuarial professionals and managers, providing oversight, guidance, and decision-making to drive functional initiatives

  • Works with team members to understand short and long-term career objectives by providing frequent, actionable feedback to support their ongoing career development

Directs Securian Financials' financial risk management activities, including capital management:

  • Partners with stakeholders and executive leadership to determine financial risk and capital management priorities and translates to actionable plans; oversees execution

  • Oversees insurance risk management for Securian, including Mortality, Longevity, Morbidity, and Policyholder Behavior, ensuring strong partnership with Solutions Groups and Shared Services to identify, measure, and effectively manage risk exposures

  • Oversees Asset Liability Management activities for Securian, providing strategic direction and oversight

  • Directs Embedded Value and Economic Capital programs and activities; ensuring value-add deliverables

  • Provides strategic thought leadership towards enterprise capital management strategy, driving towards a long-term strategic capital management framework

  • Directs team on capital management activities including, but not limited to, capital forecasting, stress testing, capital allocation, and capital management strategies

  • Key communicator and influencer with Leadership Council and ELT on capital position, targets and expectations, ensuring broad organizational alignment on capital strategy

Communicates ERM positions and strategies:

  • Coordinates Securian's Financial Risk Committee, identifying topics, coordinating preparation, and ensuring timely and effective discussion of most relevant financial risk topics for the organization

  • Key communicator of ERM topics, including presentations to Financial Risk Committee, Risk Council, and others as identified.

  • Guides team to define and execute communication strategies that maintain organizational awareness of ERM program objectives and current risk positions

  • Builds and maintains relationships with Leadership Council and ELT members, ensuring effective two-way communication and engagement on ERM topics

  • Consults with, influences, and informs solution groups and shared solutions on ERM related topics, advocating for decisions in alignment with our ERM objectives

  • Ensures strong partnership with FP&A function to integrate risk management metrics and decision-making into Goals & Plans and other financial planning tools.

Oversees Securian's ERM Governance framework and ORSA process:

  • Directs Securian's Own Risk & Solvency Assessment (ORSA) process and development of Securian's ORSA and Enterprise Risk reports, including communication with Securian's Risk Council, Board of Directors, and state regulators

  • Provides oversight to ERM Governance Group framework, ensuring appropriate coverage of critical risk topics, appropriate scoping of responsibilities, and effectiveness of committees to support our ERM objectives

  • Guides team in oversight of Risk Tolerance framework ensuring risk tolerances align to Securian's Risk Appetite and support the long-term objectives of the organization

  • Influences development and management of Risk Appetite statement

  • Provides leadership towards Securian's ERM Reporting processes, ensuring timely and relevant communication of Securian's risk positions to the Board, Risk Council, and other internal stakeholders.

  • Oversees risk identification and assessment processes for Securian's subsidiaries and affiliates, facilitating connections with Securian's ERM Governance framework.

Qualifications:

  • 5+years ofleadership experience managing direct reports

  • FSA designation

  • Demonstrated ability to build successful teams, drive results, engage executive leadership, and influence cross-organizational decision-makers to achieve strategic objectives

  • Proven ability to provide strategic thought leadership, build effective relationships, and communicate complex topics to executive leadership, the Board of Directors/Risk Council, and external stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of substantive enterprise risk management experience

  • Functional subject matter expertise in financial risk management, including insurance risk, asset-liability management, and capital management

  • Familiarity with insurance industry regulations, including the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment

  • Experience working in the financial services industry
