Job Summary:

We are seeking a thorough, resourceful reporter and strong writer who is committed to breaking news, accountability journalism and in-depth enterprise to cover Hennepin County Courts. Applicants for this position must have proven news instincts and the ability to report and write breaking news and in-depth enterprise. The person in this role must be able to develop sources both within the legal community and among the people who pass through the court system.

The reporter will write about significant criminal cases and about the workings of the courts themselves. The reporter should have an ability to humanize sometimes dry legal documents and proceedings and should bring a strong storytelling instinct to their writing. The reporter will also work at times with other members of the Public Safety team.

Excellent reporting, writing, and organizational skills are essential, as is experience covering public safety. The ability to think digitally and envision and execute different story forms are key.

Qualifications:

• Minimum five years of related experience.
• You should already be a standout reporter and writer, recognized by your peers and supervisors as among the very best at what you do.
• A track record of developing short-, mid- and long-range enterprise ideas.
• You must be comfortable posting quickly to the website and eager to engage new readers with emerging digital story forms, such as newsletters.
• You should have a commitment to coverage that represents and speaks to the breadth of Minnesota's diversity.
• You have an active presence and following on social media and have demonstrated a robust engagement with digital audiences.
• A spirit of collaboration is essential.
