Job Summary

CMOAs are hired through a centralized process by Ambulatory Nurse and CMOA Float Pool to work in the UT Southwestern outpatient clinics on the Dallas campus. Orientation and training for the new CMOA’s begins immediately before working in a clinic. The new CMOA is provided with the necessary training and tools to successfully provide services to our most valued members, our patients. CMOAs are hired into permanent full-time positions and receive UT Southwestern benefits the 1st day of the next month following their start date. Once orientation and classroom training are completed, CMOAs will have the opportunity to work in a clinic during practical training and obtain a permanent clinic. A CMOA Training Coordinator/Preceptor is assigned to each new CMOA to facilitate practical training in the clinic. 

New CMOAs will complete comprehensive back office clinical orientation and training as follows:

  • New Hire General Orientation
  • Ambulatory Orientation
  • Clinical Observation
  • Epic Registration (Prelude)
  • Epic Scheduling (Cadence)
  • EpicCare
  • Insurance Entry and Verification
  • Epic Referrals Management
  • Epic Cash Drawer, Payment Posting and Check-in/Check-out procedures
  • Practical Training in assigned clinic

This position is paid on a monthly basis at the first of every month.

Job Duties

  • Takes, records, and reports patient vital signs using medical equipment; performs procedures of low complexity such as visual acuity, development and/or musculoskeletal screening, POC testing, phlebotomy, EKG testing, and other approved clinic specific diagnostic testing.
  • Escorts or transports patients to exam rooms or treatment rooms, or other areas as directed.
  • Documents completion of patient care tasks in medical records, and reinforces education provided by the physician or nurse seeking assistance from the nurse or physician as appropriate.
  • Assists in care of patients by preparing exam rooms for patient care, facilitating use of diagnostic equipment, and ensuring availability of needed patient information, such as results of diagnostic exams and medical records.
  • Assumes responsibility for weekly autoclave temperature monitoring, POC testing QA, and monthly audit report on compliance as directed by clinic management.
  • Serves as preceptor and resource for newly-hired medical assistants and medical assistant externs, actively participating in their integration into the department.
  • May perform a variety of administrative/clerical duties, scheduling patient appointments, pre-certifying procedures, answering patient phones by collecting data to forward to the nurse for triage as directed.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities visually and physically to ensure patient safety and proper functioning.
  • May function as a clinic safety officer, verifying each employee’s knowledge of fire safety and the evacuation plan for the work area as directed.
  • Confirms appropriate patient consent and authorization forms are signed for research and/or medical treatment.
  • Maintains current customer service, clinical, and technical skills by attending training programs and procedures.  Participates in annual skills competency review.
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies as required for work area.  May provide occasional working supervision to non-licensed medical and/or clerical office support personnel for clerical functions or other non-clinical activities. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant training in an approved program, or one (1) year experience patient care in a physician office practice or hospital setting required.
  • CPR certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) before first day of employment is required.
  • Medical Assistant certification and maintenance of current certified status obtained through one of the following:
    • The American Association of Medical Assistants
    • The American Medical Technologists Association
    • The National Association for Health Professionals
    • The National Center for Competency Testing
    • The National Healthcareer Association
    • American Allied Health
