Mental Health Resources, Inc. (MHR) is a progressive, nonprofit organization that offers community- based mental health services to adults recovering from mental illness.  MHR specializes in serving complex clients who not only need mental health services but who may also have co-occurring medical, substance abuse or social conditions.  We partner with clients to increase their self-reliance and to enhance their ability to live full lives in the community.

Since its inception in 1976, MHR has provided a wide range of community mental health services to individuals and families.  MHR’s first program began as a response to a grassroots movement of families, clients and service providers who were concerned about the closing of Hastings State Hospital and the lack of needed services.  The program was incorporated as a pilot project with a legislative appropriation, 20 staff, and Assertive Community Treatment principles to serve clients with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI), holistically and in the community.

Over the years, MHR continued to grow and expanded to over 20 programs providing case management, assertive community treatment, in-home therapy, psychosocial rehabilitation, peer support groups, independent living skills training, supportive housing services and special needs basic care services.  In 2013, MHR served over 6,800 individuals in 11 Minnesota counties and we continue to see an increasing demand for our programs and services.

With over 35 years of experience, MHR has become a leader in the mental health field and in providing care to complex clients.  We specialize in providing services for individuals who not only have serious and persistent mental illness, but who may also have co-occurring medical, social and substance abuse conditions including: chemical dependence, physical illness, unemployment, cognitive impairments or dementia, homelessness, poverty, legal system involvement, a history of violence, and/or trauma.
