Role Summary:

The Packoff Machine Operator is primarily responsible for operating an Automated Case Packing Machine to package Ready to Eat Food, and monitor machine operation to ensure flow of daily production in keeping consistent with the Shift Supervisor’s direction that control and improve production yield and efficiency of facility against standard.  The position is expected to complete all changeovers, setup and basic cleaning of the machine.  In addition, this position will assist maintenance in trouble shooting and perform minor mechanical duties including minor   of all line equipment. In addition, the position reports complications of machinery directly to the Maintenance Mechanic.

Essential Competencies:

  1. STANDARD WORK

  • Perform all Automated Case Packing Machine line operation functions related to the packaging of all finished products, including loading corrugate flats, keeps glue container full, setting up and operating filling line equipment, adhering to production schedule, making equipment adjustments and assisting with line changeover.

  • Utilize Red Zone to complete all inspections, checks, chats, etc.

  • Maintain quality standards by completing in-process inspections.

  • Ensure case prints are correct.

  • Operate equipment to produce finished goods to production specifications.

  • Complete machine set-up and changeover for production specifications.

  • Follow the production schedule as issued by Planning or Supervisor direction.

  • Work cooperatively with Supervisors, Maintenance, and line workers to meet productivity standards. 

  • Communicate downtime events or other issues to Supervisor, Line Controller and RTE Leadership.

  • Continually monitor packaging equipment, product, & packaging for the production run.

  • Maintain safety, quality and production standards for each production run.

  • Maintain and operate   coders as well as case printers.

  • Responsible for correcting errors on line.

  • Actively develop solutions to limit operational downtime.

  • Break out operators for lunches/breaks and fill in where/when required

  • Informs appropriate manufacturing partners and supervisor of machine performance irregularities to minimize the impact of production downtime. Minimizes production scrap, including materials and food product.

  • Ensures that package appearance, labeling, seals, and case and pallet configurations comply with product specifications and quality standards.

  • Able to read and follow recipe instructions for multiple product lines  

FOOD SAFETY & QUALITY

  • Follow all Company policies and procedures, which include SOP’s, Food Safety and Quality Procedures, Food Quality Policies, Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP.

  • Maintain annual training in Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Defense, PPE, and OSHA regulated programs.

  • Complete metal detector checks as scheduled.

SAFETY AND HEALTH

  • Attend and participate in team, and safety meetings as required.

  • Maintains a safe, clean and organized work environment.

  • Operates packaging equipment with safety guards and switches in place, and follows all safety procedures and regulations.

COST (CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT)

  • Continually seeks out opportunities to contribute to the business success through proactive involvement in lean initiatives and lean activities.

  • Participates in process improvement activities.

  • Maintains scheduled throughput to meet team goals for reliability and budget standards.

  • Trains other machine operators and partners as needed.

EQUIPMENT USED/PPE’S

  • Hair net/beard net
  • Heat resistant gloves
  • Hard Hat

Required Qualifications: 

  1. Must be able to understand basic math.  

  2. Will be capable of running two or more lines and/or performing general mechanical duties. 

  3. Must be able to maintain and repair basic mechanical operations of line equipment.

  4. Must be able to follow our safety guidelines.

  5. Must have computer skills. Training on our system will be offered, Red Zone, etc.

  6. Ability to pass training requirements on the Automated Case Packing machine.

  7. Must have good communication skills.

  8. Must have outstanding troubleshooting skills

  9. Must have good judgment with decision making in regards to Safety and Quality.

  10. Ability to complete production related documentation on both computer and paper forms (Excel, Word) and computer knowledge.

  11. Fully utilize Red Zone, HMI (Human Machine Interface) and other integrated technology to complete required tasks.

  12. Ability to work additional overtime if required to get the job tasks completed

  13. Self-motivated and ability to make decisions

  14. Consistently meet efficiency standards and product waste reduction for a sustained period. 

  15. All hires will need to successfully pass a drug screen and background check

Preferred Qualifications: 

  1. Prior manufacturing experience preferred

  2. Strong mechanical aptitude is desired.

  3. Prior experience in a food industry environment would be a plus, but not required.

  4. Knowledge of hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, weigh machines, metal detectors, baggers, and material handling systems. 

  5. Basic understanding of electrical controls related directly to E.A. Sween packaging machinery. 

  6. Advanced understanding of packaging systems, applicable to E.A. Sween packaging equipment. 

  7. The above knowledge is normally gained through high school and post high school training, such as a technical school diploma, craft apprenticeship, or other specialized training. 

  8. Two years of direct experience may be substituted for educational training.

  9. This person will normally have one-year experience as a machine operator (or related craft). 

  10. One-year experience in direct   of machinery similar to those used by E.A. Sween   

Physical Demands:

The employee is required to: 

  • Stand – 70+%

  • Bend – 30%

  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

  • Must be able to occasionally pull up to 100 lbs. utilizing a manual pallet jack.
