Mental Health Awareness Statement

To be successful, staff must have an interest in, empathy for, and the ability to properly navigate the mental health challenges faced by our residents.

Though CommonBond is not formally a mental health provider, residents experience a wide range of complex mental health challenges such as suicidality, trauma, aggression, substance use, hoarding, anxiety, depression, social isolation, paranoia, and psychosis. These challenges directly impact residents' ability to maintain housing and invariably affect staff through vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout, and turnover."

While we recognize the immense complexity of mental health, in the context of CommonBond's mission-driven work in affordable housing, we see it to be a connection of thoughts, feelings, and actions that impact one's ability to maintain wellbeing as well as safe and stable housing.

The goal of CommonBond's mental health initiative is to integrate a mental health lens into our approach to housing in our work with residents, each other, and our broader community. At CommonBond, we see mental health as a universal concept that impacts both residents and staff. We see mental health as critical to every person having a dignified, affordable home that supports independence and advancement within a flourishing community. We wish for all our staff and partners to have role-relevant foundational skills, capacities, and resources to navigate resident and organizational mental health challenges.
